I came to Ocotal, Nicaragua in 1987 at age 19. I then drove to Nicaragua in 1988 with the Veterans Peace Convoy to bring humanitarian aid. I initially came to Nicaragua to find out what was happening with the revolutionary process here and with the nature of the struggle against the Contras.
I fell in love with the Nicaraguan revolution and the Nicaraguan people. I discovered that the Sandinista Revolution was one of the most benevolent and forgiving revolutions in world history, and I have admired the tenacity of the Nicaraguan people to defend this revolution against the Colossus of the North. Traveling to Nicaragua in the 1980’s changed my life forever and converted me into an anti-imperialist activist.
I continue to support the Sandinista Revolution because it continues to defend and advance the interests of the poor in Nicaragua. With the leadership of the FSLN, Nicaragua he become the most stable, prosperous and equitable country in the region. Nicaragua is also fifth in the world for gender equality. In short, despite great odds, including the Contra War and the US’s constant economic assault against Nicaragua, the Sandinista Revolution has accomplished great feats in 40 years, and it remains an inspiration to people throughout the world, including myself.
My heart will always be red and black!
